Art and Design in Movies!!! Evaluating Movie Trailers!

Posted in art, design, inspiration, movies, picture, update by gee12345 on March 4, 2009

I know this isnt a Design post as such but I just wanted to feature some of the awesome trailers for some Blockbuster movies that are coming out. When I say ‘design post’ I mean I am not posting inspirational pictures etc. but it is still relevant as these sorts of movies can inspire pictures to create and the detail placed into movies now-a-days is remarkable. Special Effects have blasted off and are so realistic it makes you think that there is a chance that some of things could be real. The special effects in movies are the same principal as when creating a surreal picture. You still want the picture to be photo-realistic BUT you want to convey your creativity and personal touch. It all ends up relying on how much time you are willing to spend on each picture and whether you want t0 whip a picture and pay no attention to detail or if you want to create a piece of art that really makes the viewer feel like they are there. Here are some trailers that take art to another level. Watchmen, that is coming out in a couple of days is a classic example of taking art and making into a blockbuster movie that really takes the viewer to another world. Trailers inside >>>>

Watchmen

As I said earlier Watchmen is a fabulous example of art turned to film and more and more of this happening. The special effects in this movie and the trailer alone (because I havent seen the movie yet :P ) is absolutely astounding. The attention to detail is flawless and because of it, the viewer really feels like they are there in that world experiencing what they are going through. The elements of design are visually coherent and are effectively used to set the tone and from just viewing the trailer it is obvious that it will be a dark, serious and complex story.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Now it is not mistaken that Transformers will have some of the best visual effects ever imployed into movies. The first Transformers movie had critics and fans wowing at the visual effects and the way that everything interacted with each other flawlessly. It was a visual phenomenon and I think people will agree that the second movie will employ the same impeccable attention to detail. This movie looks darker, hopefully more serious in its storyline, and a lot more action. By watching some other videos on transformers it looks like the director Michael Bay wanted to get the Robots to really emote, really make the audience care for them which is also a big part in bringing the special effects to life.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

The sixth installment in the Potter Franchise continues to grow darker and darker. Art had grown ever more in these movies but there is one main area I want to point out. After you watch it for the first time rewind back to the 0.45 mark and watch the sequence where they are reliving the past. I love how they have given it a smoky effect behind everything, the people walking, the man riding the bike and just the overall effect makes for a wonderful and artistic effect. The special effects in this movie and in all the movies are wonderful and I cant wait to see it!!!

Thats all for now but I should be back to do another round of evaluations of trailers in the near future, POST YOUR THOUGHTS!!!!!

Hey there! How are you doing? It’s funny because if you look at all these trailers they all have one thing in common….they never really stick to a scene long enough for you to even figure out what’s going on in the shot…

It seems like trailers are getting better and better at showing us less and less to a point that you’re not even sure what the movies about…. You just see Transformers 2…Harry Potter 6…..Terminator 4…… We know that we liked them before.

Okay, example, during the Super Bowl, there was this commercial for the movie, it was going so fast through the scenes that I couldn’t even figure out what the movie was about. Turned out…GI JOE….

Do I sound old here. I mean, give us a little scene, something just really awesome to watch for more than a millisecond. It’s almost not worth watching the trailers anyway.

    Okay, I sound old….nevermind. =)
